Revisiting The Suburban Backyard Chicken


They provide fresh eggs, companionship, fertilizer, eat tons of bugs including mosquitos and Japanese beetles, eat all of your kitchen scraps, and are beautiful to look at. So, why are they treated as outlaws?  Geneva is sandwiched between St. Charles- where backyard chickens are legal- and Batavia where they are about to be.

The deed to my house in Virginia specifically bars poultry of any kind -- which annoys me. People can keep big, sloppy, noisy, smelly dogs; trespassing, bird-killing cats and prone-to-escape large tropical snakes -- but not a chicken or two?
